3 DAYS excursion
SITIA, RICHTIS GORGE, TOPLOU MONASTERY, ZAKROS BEACH AND HIKING THE DEAD’S GORGE
1st Day: Heraklion – Richtis Gorge
Depart 07:00 in the morning from Herakleion. First stop voulisma Beach which is a blue fag awarded beach and one of the most beautiful beaches of the island. Next stop is Richtis Gorge is a small canyon. We will start our amazing trail from Lachanas Bridge, a beautiful stone bridge of the 19th century. About 20 minutes from the entrance there is water fall where we can also swim. The hiking trail is about 4 km in length of moderate to hard difficulty. We will end at Richti pebble beach where you can swim . Later we will enjoy local food at traditional taverna .
Arrive late in the afternoon at Sitia. Check in, at the hotel. Overnight in Sitia.
2nd day: Toplou Monastery – Vai Palm grove
Breakfast at the hotel and departure early in the morning. First stop of the day is Toplou Monastery. Toplou Monastery is a historical monastery, which was originally built in the 15th century, but was destroyed in 1612 by an earthquake. The original name of the monastery is “Panagia Akrotiriani”.
Next, we will visit the Vai Palm Forest. The area of the forest is 20 hectares and its name comes from the local dialect, in which the palm trees are called Vagies or Vagia → Vai. It is the largest area of palm trees in Crete. There we will relax and enjoy our bath. Next visit is the Erimoupoli .
Departure late in the afternoon for Palekastro Overnight in Palekastro
3rd day: Gorge of Kato Zakros (or the gorge of the Dead) – Zakros – Heraklion
Breakfast at the hotel and departure early in the morning. We will have the chance to enter the famous gorge of the Dead. Those who do not wish to experience the hiking can visit the archaeological place or go for swimming in Kato Zakros.
It is a gorge of exceptional beauty with large caves on its walls. In some of these caves were found tombs from the Minoan era and inside findings of great archaeological value. The name of the gorge is due to these tombs as well as the caves “Caves of the Dead”.
Then, after our hike, we will relax enjoying our swim in the beautiful beach of Kato Zakros where we will also have lunch.
Late in the evening return in Heraklion city.
